Easy Flex Fuel Installation on the E60 M5
December 11, 2017
Most of the questions we get about the PROFLEX Commander E85 Flex Fuel system aren't about the dyno results – the charts speak for themselves, after all – but instead about how our systems are installed and if the process can be done at home. The answer is yes, many customers have the knowledge and skills required to properly install our systems at home, but if you haven’t worked on your car a lot – specifically doing things like your injectors – we recommend professional installation. We've spent countless hours under the hoods of BMWs, Mercedes, and other high-performance vehicles, testing and developing the PROFLEX Commander systems. Our systems are complete kits and include everything you need to run E85 right out of the box. So you can rightly assume that we here at Advanced Fuel Dynamics are pretty practiced in the installation of our PROFLEX Commander E85 Flex Fuel system and you might not believe us when we say the job is easy. To get a third-party perspective, we want to introduce you to one of our customers, Zach at Twinline Garage. Zach got our PROFLEX Commander for E60 M5 to install on his BMW E60 M5. With the massive 5.0L V10 S85 engine producing 500hp at the crank, this car, even in stock trim is no slouch. In fact, at the time of its release, the E60 M5 was the quickest and fastest four-door sedan in the world. But even in cars with already impressive stats, E85 can make more power. So needless to say, Zach was excited to put our product to the test and created a great rundown on the install process. Like many modern cars, the BMW E60 M5 engine bay is crowded and uses quite a bit of plastic under the hood to cover the engine so it can appear complicated to get access to the injectors and fuel rails. In his video, Zach walks us through the entire process of removing the air boxes, cabin air filters, strut brace, coolant expansion tank, and plenum. With everything out of the way, he then installed the fuel sensor into the car's hard line using the provided plug-and-play line and fittings and hid it in the engine bay. Next, he shows how to plug the harness into the fuel sensor and each of the ten fuel injectors then hide it for a stealthy install. Zach decided to install the PROFLEX Commander units under the driver's side cabin air filter in the compartment with the brake booster. After the ground was installed, he put all the plastic panels and air boxes back in place. Despite the process only taking about an hour and a half from start to finish, Zach says the most tedious part of the job, and what took most of his time was the removal and reinstallation of the plastic panels. It's a simple plug and play solution to getting flex fuel performance for a monster like the E60 M5. Finally, to show off the fruits of his labor, Zach gives us a quick pull on E85 and his reaction says it all.
