FAQ
What is a flex fuel system?
Are your systems really plug and play?
Most of them are, yes. All ProFlex™ Commander systems are complete plug and play systems that can be installed by you or your shop in about an hour with few exceptions. No other parts or tuning is required. Period. Plug it in, close your hood, add E85. We like to say the Commander is a “third grader level” installation job because it is that easy.
Our FlexLink™ systems have a variety of uses and some require very minor tuning, specifically in GM models with ECU flex mapping. The tuner will pin your ECU and turn on your flex fuel maps, which are turned off from the factory. This is generally about a 1-2 hour job for a tuning shop. If you have your own tuning system like HPTuners MPVI2 you can do it all yourself.
All of our fuel hoses, wiring harnesses and electronic components are OE quality, model specific and fully assembled with no cheesy hose clamps or frustrating bits and pieces to mess with.
Please note: You should be wary of products that use metal air lines for fuel, fuel lines with hose clamps or harnesses with DIY connectors or bare wire connectors. Fuel leaks and electrical continuity issues can result in engine and underhood area damage.
Can I still run gas?
Why should I run E85?
What if I have a tune or plan to get one?
Will I make more Horsepower with your system and E85?
Will I need to upgrade my fuel system?
Will E85 ruin my fuel system?
Do I have to run gas periodically?
Is nitrous compatible with your ProFlex system?
Yes, you can run nitrous oxide (NOx) with ProFlex™ however there is no such thing as “flex nitrous”. The nitrous system is jetted for a particular fuel, usually gasoline. If you want to run nitrous with E85 you will need to have your system specifically jetted for E85 and you will only be able to hit the bottle when running E85. Our ProFlex Connect™ smartphone app shows you exactly how much ethanol you have in your car, so you can use the app to make sure you have the right fuel blend for your nitrous system in real time.
Make sure to talk to your nitrous system supplier about the right jetting for the fuel you plan to use while boosting on nitrous.
How do I tune my car with a ProFlex Commander installed?
This is our most frequently asked question and the answer is really simple. You don’t have to change a thing. You can run your stock tune or any performance gas tune with the Commander. When you visit your tuning shop put gas in the tank and have them install their best 91/93 tune the same way they always do. The ProFlex™ system was specifically designed to stay out of your tuner’s way so they can do what they always do without making accommodations for our system.
Ethanol fuels have a very high octane equivalent to gas and are very stable. However, E85 is a completely different fuel from gasoline and does not depend on timing for making power. We have tested many tunes and timing settings on the dyno and what we have found is that a good gas tune makes the most power when you are running gas and when you run E85. Running a good pump gas tune with the Commander means your car will still be “flexible”, that is, you will still be able to fill up with either fuel and have safe, high horsepower performance.
Please note: If your tuner is unfamiliar with our products they are always welcome to call us or reach out to info@afd-usa.com with questions so we can help them understand how to tune around our system. Once tuners understand our technology they often become big supporters and even installing dealers so don’t hesitate to have them contact us. We are always happy to help and we speak their language.
Why is The ProFlex system the best way to run E85?
First of all, all E85 is not equal. When you go to the pump your E85 is going to be somewhere between 51% and 83% ethanol. That’s the federal standard. To run E85 safely and get the most power the fuel volume at the injector (fuel load) needs to be precisely indexed to the ethanol percentage. If it is not, you can either run dangerously lean and burn a piston or you can run rich and wash your cylinder walls which will cause piston ring failure and cylinder wall scoring. Not good.
An “E85 tune” is a dinosaur in the industry. An E85 tune is good for one thing; 85% ethanol, which as we’ve explained, you will never get at the pump. Essentially, an E85 tune is only for cars that run barrel grade race fuel that is guaranteed to be exactly 85% ethanol. If you want to go to the pump for your E85, or run gas sometimes an E85 tune is a terrible idea and will definitely (DEFINITELY!) damage your engine. Our patented ProFlex technology was developed specifically to solve the problem of the engine damage and reduced life expectancy caused by E85 tunes.
There are also “wide band” systems that work off of your oxygen sensor data to try to correct the rich/lean condition caused by differences in fuel content. The time it takes to adjust to changes in fuel content is called latency. For comparison, a wide band or “flex tune” can have latency for as much as hundreds of miles. The Commander works in real time and has zero latency. In short, wide band systems are painfully slow, nearly always incorrect and will definitely cause your engine to fail prematurely. Again, we are not saying wide band doesn’t work, but it is a terribly slow and inaccurate way to handle flex fuel and with the ProFlex Commander available there is no reason to settle for something that works half as well and generally costs more.
WARNING: If you ever see a system that requires you to measure your fuel content or watch your injector duty cycle, run the other way. There is no reason you should have to work to run E85. Mathematically derived duty cycle is a mythical beast using fuzzy math. It is a smoke and mirrors way to convince you to buy an inferior management system.
Your engine performance and life expectancy depend on you making good decisions when you choose a flex fuel solution. A new engine is a lot more expensive and painful than getting the right solution now. AFD customers have never reported any engine damage from using our system in our entire history and we are not going to start with yours!
The ProFlex™ Commander is the most sophisticated and accurate way to run E85 and it is patented. We developed the Commander to do all of the heavy lifting for you.
The key to injector performance is the most complete atomization of the fuel possible while delivering precisely measured fuel volume. Our patented Digital Injector Management™ (DIM™) is incredibly fast and accurate, meaning we can control your injectors much more precisely than your ECU/PCM, which uses slower analogue duty cycle signals. DIM delivers fuel loads more accurately than any other system, with the ability to digitally manipulate both injector pulse duration and speed allowing for better atomization and improving performance. This is why the Commander typically increases horsepower even when the vehicle is running on gasoline. In fact, by eliminating the obsolete analogue duty cycle control from the equation, the Commander can actually deliver more fuel at any given load than any other injector management system including your factory ECU allowing your injectors to supply E85 exactly as needed. Even without E85 the Commander is a vast improvement over your factory computer in terms of injector control and fuel management.
Our BlendSense™ technology measures content in real time with a 30 microsecond refresh rate and zero latency, meaning the system is always 100% correct no matter what fuel you are running and is seamlessly compatible with gas tunes and power adders.
Simply put, the Commander does exactly what it is supposed to do in real time with no monitoring, flashing, upgrading or measuring. It is the only flex fuel system like it in the world. There is simply no more accurate and reliable way to maximize power and engine safety than the ProFlex Commander. And the Commander is made in the USA.
What is the difference between the standard Commander and the PRO version?
Will the PRO version work on my stock set-up?
Do I need to upgrade my fuel system?
One of the things that makes our systems and our company different is our dyno lab testing. If you see a system on our site then that vehicle has been on our dyno. We carefully monitor air/fuel ratio, power gains and operating temperatures in a carefully controlled test environment. Because of this careful testing we can say for certain that a vehicle has a fuel system that can handle full E85 without upgrades.
If we find an engine that needs upgrades to run full E85 you will see that noted on the product page with injector recommendations. If not, you are good to go.
NOTE: If you have power adders you may need injectors, or in extreme cases, a fuel pump upgrade. We are very knowledgeable on fuel system upgrades and can help you figure out what you need for safe, effective E85 performance. Contact us directly if you have power adders or big power goals so we can help.
